Iconic home on Sullivan’s Island demolished

SULLIVAN’S ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) – An iconic home that could be seen just off Beach Inlet for more than 40 years has been demolished.

Crews were seen finishing up demolition on the landmark structure Thursday morning. The property owners plan to build a new home in its place.

Sullivan’s Island Planning Director, Charles Drayton, said the home was sitting vacant in disrepair and needed to be rebuilt because of damage inside.

The home with iconic curves was originally built in 1982 and has been recognized for decades for its unique architecture. But the history of the property dates back to World War II when it was part of Marshall Reservation.

Drayton said the home’s foundation was originally constructed as a gun turret.

“Right around the time that they finished the foundation of the gun turret, which is the large cylinder, the war ended. So, they never finished that portion of building out the fort in that area of the island. And it was eventually sold off and in 1982 it was developed into a house and they just used that footprint that was already existing,” said Drayton.

Drawings shared with News 2 revealed plans for the new home. And if you are wondering, it won’t be round. But it will have rounded porches as a nod to the history of the original home.
