Georgetown County deputy strikes car, tree while in pursuit of stolen vehicle

PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) – A search is underway on Pawleys Island following a chase involving a stolen vehicle Monday afternoon.

A deputy with the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) collided with an uninvolved vehicle and then skidded into a tree on Martin Luther King Road and Petigru Drive.

Officials said the deputy and the civilian were taken to Grand Strand Hospital to be evaluated.

The suspect in the stolen car also crashed further up the roadway. The driver and a male passenger then ran into the woods and were being tracked by a K-9 unit.

Deputies have detained two female passengers.

South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) is investigating both crashes.
