PGA Championship returning to Kiawah Island in 2031

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) – The PGA Championship is headed back to the Ocean Course on Kiawah Island in 2031.

This will mark the third time the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort has hosted the event. The first was in 2012 and more recently in 2021 when Phil Michelson became the oldest golfer to win a major.

It’s a big deal for Kiawah Island, the Charleston community, and South Carolina. When the course hosted the championship in 2012, the economic impact was said to be around $200 million to the Charleston area.

Kiawah Island Golf Resort President Roger Warren projects an impact of over $250 million when it returns in 2031.

The Ocean Course joins only six other courses in hosting the PGA Championship for a third time. It’s quite an honor for Warren and his staff.

“We’re thrilled to be able to bring the PGA Championship back to the Ocean Course and to Kiawah Island Golf Resort in ’31. What it means to us is it’s a justification and verification of the quality of the golf course and of the golf experience for the tour players, for the fans, and we can’t do it without the support of our employees that are here, as well as the local community here at Kiawah and the Charleston area,” he said.

The 2031 PGA Championship is not the only tournament coming to Kiawah Island. The 2029 Junior PGA Championship will be played at Turtle Point and The Ocean Course as well.
