10 affordable rental homes coming to Chicora neighborhood

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Nearly a dozen affordable homes will soon be available for rent in a North Charleston community.

North Charleston Mayor Reggie Burgess, area leaders, and representatives from local nonprofit Metanoia will cut the ribbon on 10 new affordable housing units that are currently under construction in the Chicora-Cherokee area.

Metanoia is a nonprofit organization that creates programs to amplify opportunities for thriving communities in Chicora and nearby historically Black neighborhoods, according to its website.

The homes are funded in part by the South Carolina Housing Finance and Development Authority on land purchased through a partnership investment from the South Carolina Ports Authority with the Lowcountry Alliance for Model Communities.

Leaders say the 10 homes are constructed on formerly vacant lots on Grayson, Leland, Kraft, and Proctor Streets. They range in size from two to three bedrooms with rental rates varying according to size and the renter’s income.

“Several of the homes are designed to be affordable to residents earning at or below 50% of the Area Median Income ($40,860 for a household of one),” the nonprofit said.

Two of the units are also fully ADA-compliant to serve residents with significant ability needs.
